GHAZIABAD: With the farmers' protest in and around Delhi against the recently enacted farm laws entering 16th day, the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) on Friday reiterated that the agitation would not be withdrawn till the three Acts are repealed.

"There is only one way to end the stand-off between the Centre and the farmers. Both have to back down. The Centre will have to repeal the laws and the farmers will go home," said BKU spokesperson Rakesh Tikait, adding that they don't want the amendments suggested by the central government.

Asked about the possibility of further dialogue with the government, the BKU spokesperson said that if the government sends an invitation for talks, the farmers will deliberate on the prospects of the further dialogue.

A DAY after farmers’ representatives rejected the Government’s offer to amend its new agriculture laws in a bid to resolve the two-week-long faceoff with protesters camped at Delhi’s borders, the Centre Thursday issued a fresh call for farmers to end their agitation and join the next round of talks.

Addressing a press conference, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said: “I would still urge the unions to find a way through discussions by withdrawing their next phase of agitation.”

The appeal from Tomar came after the Centre offered several concessions, including a written assurance on continuation of minimum support price (MSP)-based procurement and parity in transactions inside and outside Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) mandis.

Tomar, however, said that “it is not appropriate to announce a further agitation… when the discussion is going on”. “Several rounds of talks have taken place. During the discussions, the Government identified some points to which they (farm unions) also agreed that these have come up during deliberations. We have given them the written proposal. If they think that the proposal lacks some of their points, then they should discuss. Even if they have any objection to the language of the proposal, they should discuss it. We are ready for discussions,” Tomar said.

“The Government has no ego… We are ready to discuss with an open mind. Whenever their proposal comes, we will definitely hold discussions,” he said.

Asked about demands to repeal the laws, Tomar said any law cannot be entirely defective. However, he said, the Government is ready to discuss provisions that may adversely affect farmers.

Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Piyush Goyal, who was present during the press conference, cited the BJP’s strong performance in the local body elections in Congress-led Rajasthan this week to say that the people have welcomed the new Farm laws.

Of the 636 posts of zila parishad members across 21 districts in the state, the BJP won 353 and the Congress 252. The BJP is also expected to claim zila pramukh seats in at least 13 districts where it has a clear majority, followed by the Congress in 5.

“The Rajasthan election results, which are most recent and have happened in the last few days, are evidence of the fact that the people of India, the farmers of India continue to trust Prime Minister Modi, continue to have faith in Prime Minister Modi’s government,” Goyal said.

The last five rounds of talks between the Government and farmers have remained inconclusive. The scheduled round of talks, on December 9, was cancelled after a meeting between Union Home Minister Amit Shah and representatives of farm unions. It was then that the Centre extended its new set of proposals to resolve the crisis.

Buses, transport of essential items to ply in Maharashtra

In Maharashtra, the ruling Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress are among the key parties to support the nationwide strike. Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut urged people to take part in the “non-political” bandh to support farmers. Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik said NCP workers would join the shutdown by observing social distancing norms.

However, Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses and taxis will ply as scheduled during Tuesday’s ‘Bharat bandh’, PTI reported. The All India Motor Transport Congress, an apex body of trucker outfits, said it would “join the Bharat bandh and suspend their operations on December 8”. “Transportation of essential commodities like milk, vegetables and fruits have been excluded from the bandh,” said Daya Natkar, secretary of Maharashtra Rajya Truck Tempo Tankers Vahatuk Sangh.

Thousands of farmers in Karnataka will join the Bharat bandh on Tuesday. Karnataka Rajya Riatha Sangha president K Chandreshekar said members of around 300 farmers’ organisations would participate. Aikya Horata, a coalition of farmer, labour and Dalit groups, started an indefinite sit-in protest in Bengaluru on Monday. The Karnataka chapter of the All-India Kisan Sangharsh Co-ordination Committee (AIKSCC), a coalition of several farmer organisations, has called for a six-hour bandh on Tuesday.

The Karnataka Congress said it would launch a letter drive against the farm and labour laws. According to Congress Karnataka chief D K Shivakumar, these letters with the signature of farmers and labourers would be sent to the President.

“Congress president Sonia Gandhi has directed the party workers to gather the opinion of the farmers and labourers by way of signature on the letter. On the directions of our party president Sonia Gandhi, we are going to provide 8.8 lakh letters to the farmers and labourers who will sign on it and send it to the President of India,” Shivakumar said.

In Assam, all opposition parties — including Congress, AIUDF, the Left, among others — have come together to extend their “full support” to the Bharat Bandh called by the farmer unions on December 8.A statement from the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee said that apart from supporting the bandh on December 8, the party’s local units will hold protest programs with the farmers in farms across the state and burn effigies of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Assam chapter of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) said that the new farm laws amounted to annulling the Minimum Support Price, which the BJP had promised in its “Vision Document” for Assam.

The statement — which was signed by the Congress, CPI-ML, CPI, Liberal Democratic Party Anchalik Gana Marcha,  Assam Jatiya Parishad, Raijor Dol, among others — said that the general public’s food security will be affected by the corporatisation of agriculture that the laws will result in. T

he statement appealed to all offices and educational institutions, including banks and courts to remain shut, and vehicles to be off the roads on December 8.
